“the self is only a threshold”

Finished copies of Empty Space arrived today. Here’s a picture of the hardback &, below, a free quote from Andre Malraux. Make of that what you like but don’t say I never give you anything.

“The great mystery is not that we should have been thrown down here at random between the profusion of matter and that of the stars; it is that from our very prison we should draw, from our own selves, images powerful enough to deny our own nothingness.” –Andre Malraux

  1. Beautiful. Can’t wait to fill my empty space with your empty space.

  2. I love it, and I can’t wait to read it!

  3. Congratulations. And I’ll add a “can’t wait” to the chorus. Actually just finishing a re-read of Light, and then on to Nova Swing…

Congratulations, Mike – moebius life under the impossible roof-tops of Saudade. Bring it on!

a marvellous job on the cover, aggressive, base, thoughtful and .. haunting

  7. Absolutely delighted to hear it’s reached print. The fresh, crisp book as artefact is pleasing enough in itself. But it’s what lies in the imaginative spaces within that counts. Words filling, explicating, exploring, redefining the void.

I know it has nothing to do with the book, but I can’t resist posting this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV6kGSlo-ec

Thanx for the good wishes everyone.

I’m glad people like the cover. It’s raw & direct. (Also, no techno-rapture or faked up ultra realist astronomical spectacle.)

  9. ‘Kinell! The cover doesn’t look crap. A bit of a breakthrough.

Hi iotar. As one of the few people who’ve both read the book & seen the cover, you’re well placed to say. I hope it works, because Simon Spanton at Gollancz is using the same artist, Sam Green, & the same blunt design package for all the coming reprints–Light (I posted that a while back), Nova Swing, Climbers &c. We’ve already had roughs for the Climbers image, & it’s going to be a very exciting cover.

  11. A really striking, intriguing cover. Book already ordered from a flesh and blood independent bookseller who also does great coffee. Add me to the can’t-wait chorus!

  12. It’s the sort of cover you wouldn’t be embarrassed to be discovered behind on the tube. Then again, you see people reading George RR Martin in public without a trace of shame these days. It looks smart and grown up enough for non-genre readers. Something of the crime novel but with a touch of otherness.

It also works for the book. Although if I had to be picky, I would have chosen something in warmer, more sun-drenched colours, since that was how a lot of what I liked about the book looks in my visual imagination. But the hints of “sparks in everything” about this cover should act as a come hither to readers who enjoyed Light.
