Although given the sea extends across the entire horizon, they could be said to be heading towards it: shades of Kate Chopin’s ‘The Awakening’, Woolf’s ‘To the Lighthouse’, Emanuele Crialese’s film ‘Respiro’… and all points in between.

I should have given it a date that placed it firmly in the High Modern.

  3. Is that where we live, the High Modern? It feels definitively unstable like a building in Shanghai…

In my imagination, they live in the High Modern. I would date them, despite the obvious continuity flaws, to 1929; perhaps a 1929 that occurs some time after the Present. Whereas, despite theory to the contrary, we still live in the Low Postmodern.

    Where ever we
Wherever one lives in the present, reverse space’s continuity to become the sea making its way past women.
