Although given the sea extends across the entire horizon, they could be said to be heading towards it: shades of Kate Chopin’s ‘The Awakening’, Woolf’s ‘To the Lighthouse’, Emanuele Crialese’s film ‘Respiro’… and all points in between.
In my imagination, they live in the High Modern. I would date them, despite the obvious continuity flaws, to 1929; perhaps a 1929 that occurs some time after the Present. Whereas, despite theory to the contrary, we still live in the Low Postmodern.
