the beats go on
by uzwi
I’m sick of the sound of structural beats, dropping into place and rolling the machine downslope to Hollywood, in everything I see, hear and read. It’s the same old story about telling the story, that’s all the story I get from it. I am deeply dissatisfied by being promised a new story each time but only being told that one. I want my money back.
That is why I usually stick to the library queue and spend only for the really good ones.
The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmari Jääskeläinen
I am Radar by Leif Larsen
The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero
While these may, like nearly everything, retain structural beats, these beats are a lot more complicated and ride off on riffs that come back when you least expect it. All of them are unexpected hauntings, sourced from environs where the mythic is dense and less contaminated by the press of commercial demands.
So: narrative arc, my arse. You and Greece, Mike.
